Go Stun (reverse/about-turn) – Part 2

I’m part of a worship band at church. One of the things we are always pressed for is time. There never seems to be enough of it! More often than not (unfortunately), tempers can flare especially when things start to go wrong and creative differences in music crop up. Not long after my previous incident, I was struck again by the same thought.

Often as musicians it’s extremely tempting to charge ahead when things go wrong and patience runs out. Just “getting it done with” so to speak. Have you been through the frustration of repeating something over and over again only to make a mistake and have to start over? If you do, then you have a sense of the frustration musicians feel during practice EXCEPT that it might not be you who makes the mistake and so your anger and frustration might be direction to someone else and compounded over time. :)

Do we need to go over things repeatedly till its perfect? For the sake of the team’s sanity and overall well-being, I don’t think so. :P Is it worthwhile to address a problem and fix it if it means just spending a few more minutes? Absolutely.

How do we know when to do what? That’s a toughie isn’t it? Here’s a couple of things I can think of on the top of my head.

1. You gotta know yourself: are you being lazy? Or too proud to admit your mistakes? Or… (you fill in the blanks)
2. If you can be honest with yourself, then you can count the cost. Is it worthwhile to stop and ‘go stun’? Or will you be better off riding on the momentum of the moment?

I’m sure you can think of more. Experience is definitely one of the things that will help you assess a situation properly and subsequently make a decision. What makes the biggest difference is the attitude you bring to the table. Whether you make the right or wrong decision to ‘go stun’, staying upbeat and positive will help not only yourself, but your team as you learn from your mistakes. :)

I think the problem is that it's quite hard to figure out if something is worth pursuing or not. I agree that being positive at least make the experience a pleasant one.

Yup, that's always the problem isn't it? I guess that's why they say Attitude determines your Altitude. Hehe.
